Over the past two weeks nearly three dozen high school athletes around Southwest Louisiana made their college decisions official, and on Tuesday, four more athletes from St. Louis Catholic, and Sulphur signed their National Letters of Intent, making their decisions official.

The McNeese men’s basketball team got their 2022-23 season started on Monday night at the Legacy Center as they hosted the Champion Christian Tigers. The Cowboys entered the season with sophomore forward Christian Shumate getting named to the Men’s Basketball Preseason All-Southland Conference First Team, and against the Tigers, Shumate would have his way.
Golfing legend Tiger Woods is in Louisiana for the Notah Begay III Boys Jr Golf National Championship being held at Koasati Pines at Coushatta, in Kinder. Woods is at the tournament to play an unusual role for the 15-time major winner; caddie, as his son Charlie is competing in the National Championship which teed off on Monday.
The McNeese Cowboys (2-6), are back in action as they host the Eastern Illinois Panthers. McNeese is coming off of a tight home loss to Southeastern Louisiana. Walker Wood will make his second start at quarterback tonight for the Cowboys after putting up 287 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns last week.
Thursday night the Jennings Bulldogs hosted the Saint Louis Catholic Saints in what would be Head Coach Rusty Phelps final career game. Early on the Bulldogs took a 14-7 lead off of touchdowns by their tailbacks Rejohn Zeno and Jamanc McZeal. The Saints would respond though as their run game would dominate the second half as Saint Louis Catholic would go on to edge out Jennings 31-21. Coach Phelps finishes his career with 213 total wins, and lead the Bulldogs to the 3A State Championship in 2019.
Two week 10 high school football games have been moved from Friday to Thursday due to the threat for inclement weather on Friday night, adding to what was already a packed Thursday night slate. Both the Grand Lake at Dequincy game, and the Lake Arthur at Vinton game, have been moved from Friday to Thursday due to weather.
Barbe High School’s Landon Victorian is not only one of the top players in the state of Louisiana, but he’s one of the top players in the nation as a whole as he’s the 10th ranked player in the Class of 2024, and the second ranked starting pitcher according to Perfect Game, and on Wednesday he announced where he would be playing his college baseball.
In Lynn Kennedy’s first season as head coach of the McNeese Women’s Basketball team, he helped the Cowgirls to an overall record of 13-15 in 2021-22, but in 2022-23, and coach Kennedy’s second year at the helm, Kennedy is hoping to see more out of his Cowgirls.
2021-22 was a rough season for the McNeese Men’s Basketball team in John Aiken’s first year as head coach as they finished with a record of 11-22 overall, and a 4-10 conference record, but with the 2022-23 season beginning on Monday, November 7th, coach Aiken likes where his team is at heading into his second season with the Cowboys.
Reese Ashworth is a multi-sport athlete for Dequincy High School as he plays baseball, basketball, and football for the Tigers, but on Tuesday he signed his National Letter of Intent to focus on baseball in college, where he will play for the LSU Eunice Bengals.
Over the weekend McNeese Head Coach Gary Goff decided to make a change at Quarterback as the Cowboys took the field to take on Southeastern Louisiana. Walker Wood, who had played at wide receiver through the first 7 games of the season, made his first start under center for the Cowboys on Saturday.
The McNeese Cowboys were back in action Saturday night as they hosted the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. The game started out with a new face at quarterback for McNeese, as Walker Wood ran out with the offense for the first drive of the game. Early in the first the Cowboys would put together a really good good drive that would end with a Deonta McMahon touchdown to put the cowboys up 6-0.
